On March 21, 1964, four University of California, Los Angeles graduates started SeaWorld. Although their original concept of an underwater restaurant was not viable at the time, it was enlarged into a 22-acre (8.9 ha) marine zoological park on the San Diego side of Mission Bay. The park started with 45 staff, many dolphins, sea lions, and two seawater aquariums after a $1.5 million investment, and welcomed over 400,000 people in its first year.

La Jolla Cove

4. La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove is a small cove in La Jolla, San Diego County, California, with a beach surrounded by cliffs. Point La Jolla defines the cove’s southern boundary. The region is popular with swimmers and scuba divers because it is part of a protected marine reserve. The surf can pour in ferociously from the open ocean at times, generating enormous, strong waves. La Jolla Cove’s water temperature is normally between 78°F and 80°F (26°C and 27°C), which is slightly cooler than other San Diego beaches. When tide pools are revealed during high tide, they emerge at the cove during very low tides.

The Cove is home to several California sea lions, who are hauled out and spend time on the beaches, rocks, and bluffs before returning to the water. Similar to what happened with Pacific harbor seals at Children’s Pool Beach, there is controversy regarding how humans will influence the sea lions at Children’s Pool Beach.

5. Torrey Pines State Reserve

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a natural reserve of 2,000 acres in La Jolla, California, off North Torrey Pines Road. Although it is located within city limits of San Diego, it remains one of the most remote sections of coast in Southern California. The reserve’s southern border is defined by Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course and its northern boundary by Del Mar. In 1977, the reserve was designated a National Natural Landmark by the United States Department of Interior.

The Torrey Pines State Beach Reserve is only a few minutes away from La Jolla, and offers panoramic views of the ocean. A plateau with cliffs that overlook Torrey Pines State Beach, as well as a lagoon that is essential for sea birds, make up the reserve. Bobcat, fox, skunk, raccoon, coyote, rabbit, cacti, coastal chaparral, and the uncommon Torrey pine are among the animals and plants found in the preserve. From the cliffs it is possible to observe several species of whale including humpback whale and gray whale while they migrate.
